Hello, Yeah It's Been A While

Wow. I hadn't realized I had not kept up with these updates - not that anyone is reading them. Since my last post I have been through two different hosting companies, one for two years, and am on to a third.

Excuse the interruption. My internal update blogs are so screwy. When I checked just prior to posting this, the last update I saw was from 12-29-2004. Go figure. Please excuse the unsure timeline of my opening statement. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

The site seems stable. The relationship with the new host is bittersweet. I like being with a major provider, I like having an uptime guarantee, and the price was reasonable. What I don't like is that every time I have any contact with them - updates, maintenance, emails, etc. - they turn on the sales pitch hot and heavy.

I appreciate that they have many more services than what I have a current need for but do I need to be reminded of that every five minutes? Seriously, it is annoying enough that I am wondering already - six weeks into the contract - if I want to renew next year or just go back to simple, cheap hosting.

New Host

I moved my sites to a new host. In trying to download the information from the old host, I missed the update directories.

The jury is still out on the new host but there are no refunds so we'll see how the next 12 months go...

More Speed!

I know the site is slow. For some reason, ever since I installed that new hard drive, even the SSH connections have been slow.

I have seriously been considering moving all of the sites to a managed server, which I'll have to pay for. I think I have one in mind and I have the funds necessary to pay for the first year. Timing troubles

The server is having a problem with logins that is affecting my ability to add entries to the update pages. It appears to be taking an unusually long time to authenticate which, I think, is causing remote logins - such as from Blogger - to time out.

I may have to reinstall the O/S

Hardware upgrade complete

The new drive is installed and formatted and Fedora Core 3 has been reinstalled. Apache is running fine and the web pages have been uploaded to the server. This should be the last major change for a while unless I get new hardware - which I don't anticipate.

I received a new hard drive for Christmas so I will soon be able to transfer the 20GB drive from my computer to the server. The website will finally be running on a large, stable hard drive.

This means the server will be down for a few hours some time between today and January 3rd.
